Kelly Rossum

Lake Sunset

Program Notes

Little Mary symbolizes the dream-like beauty of the Northern Minnesota wilderness. (The real Lake Mary is located near Emily, Minnesota, USA) When at the lake, days are filled by floating on inner tubes and jumping off docks, while evenings are reserved for songs and s’mores by the fire. Guitars and harmonicas provide the music of choice, and if the weather holds, the tunes can go all night. But if the wind picks up and a storm blows in, Mother Nature calls her own tune. Crashing waves, howling winds, thunder and lightning will turn a campground into a cacophony of excitement, an experience you’ll remember forever.

Jazz Ensemble

This big band arrangement is for an advanced band and features a tenor saxophone soloist. The blowing sections are for the tenor and bass, plus plenty of drumset heat. The feel changes from a simple 3/4 waltz to a raucous 6/8 groove with a heavy backbeat. The range of the lead trumpet ascends to a high concert E and all of the trumpets also double on flugelhorns. The acoustic guitar is a crucial element to the piece, however there are guitar cues written in the piano part.

The JE in the file name indicates the jazz ensemble version(s).
