The musical concept behind this ensemble is to fuse the style of a Russian circus band with the improvisational techniques of Sun Ra and Charles Mingus. Compositions for the ensemble contain minimal written thematic material and rely heavily upon spontaneous interaction amongst the musicians. The group was originally formed to perform “You”, choreographed by Suzanne Wiltgen.

The University of Wisconsin, River-Falls commissioned Kelly to compose a soundtrack to the silent film, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Directed by John S. Robertson, starring John Barrymore, Charles Lane, Brandon Hurst, Cecil Clovelly and Nita Naldi, this 1920 silent film presents a perfect opportunity for the Nicollet Circus Band’s particular musical talents. Seven short Demo-Reel clips have been produced with support from the American Composers Forum.
