Back to Renovation ReviewsKelly Rossum Renovation It ain't on Blue Note or Verve Records, but the Kelly Rossum Quintet's new album is easily the equal of most big-name jazz releases. Renovation has a heap of well-sculpted original music, with the local trumpeter and MacPhail prof proving his mettle as a post-bop, post-Miles Davis, subtle sonic Svengali. The band is outstanding (pianist Chris Lomheim, tenor saxophonist Chris Thomson, bassist Michael O'Brien and drummer J.T. Bates), their solos are taut and tasty, and the "cover" tunes are sweet surprises -- Hendrix's tender ballad "Little Wing" and Ornette Coleman's frenetic neo-bopper "Bug Powder." Very modern and stylish, with traces of electronica, yet never too trendy, Renovation is a revelation. (7:30 p.m. Wed., Cedar Cultural Center, 416 Cedar Av.
