Back to Renovation ReviewsKelly Rossum Renovation ROSSUM 'RENOVATES' Between his instructor duties at the MacPhail Center for Music and his involvement with free-form jazz band Electropolis and the new Jazz Is Now! Orchestra, trumpeter Kelly Rossum finally managed to find time to record a followup to his well-received 2002 CD, Party's Over/Begun. His new CD, Renovation, was made with the quintet lineup he debuted last year, featuring pianist Chris Lomheim, bassist Michael O'Brien, sax man Chris Thomson and drummer J.T. Bates. "After the first gig we did together, I knew I had to try to capture that magic [on CD]," said Rossum, who will lead the lineup through a release party Wednesday at the Cedar Cultural Center (7:30 p.m., $8-$12). Predictably, the new album is edgier and wilder than the first, with tracks ranging from the techno-styled opener "Cheap Cigars" to the jittery gem "Bugpowder," which Ornette Coleman recorded for the "Naked Lunch" soundtrack. The oddest cut of all might be the pretty, eight-minute take on Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," with Lomheim in a starring role. Said Rossum, "It was meant to be a jazz song." Agreed.
