Back to Renovation ReviewsKelly Rossum Renovation Chris Riemenschneider: Best local CDs of 2004 ... so far July 23, 2004 It's a positive sign o' the times that I almost forgot to include Prince in this annual semi-annual list of best local albums, all released in the first half of the year. There are so many brand-spankingly new names kicking up a buzz around the Twin Cities, Ol' Faithful almost didn't register as part of the scene -- even with one of his best albums in years. Instead, a trio of young hip-hop acts immediately came to mind, as did a track-suit-wearing pop-rock band not even a year old, as did a MacPhail professor who could teach all local jazzists a thing or two. The only other CD on the list that's not by a relative newcomer, Willie Walker's "Right Where I Belong," is from a guy who took a nearly 40-year hiatus from recording. [skip to…] Kelly Rossum, Renovation (612 Sides) As classic-sounding as it is innovative, this sophomore effort by trumpeter and MacPhail School teacher Rossum somehow finds cohesion amid tracks as wild as a nugget from Ornette Coleman's "Naked Lunch" soundtrack and as dangerously predictable as a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing." With MVP help from J.T. Bates, Chris Lomheim, Michael O'Brien and Chris Thomson, Rossum steps out as a premier jazz talent by stepping around jazz boundaries.
